This is an original musical setting of a traditional lullaby text for the Christ child composed by Michael McGlynn.

The text is ancient, but the sentiment is universal. This version is a new arrangement of the song, with a new harp and violin part added in 2008, although the melody and choral part are the same as appear on the album OMNIS by Anúna. Anúna is an Irish choral group. In 1987 Dublin composer Michael McGlynn founded An Uaithne, a name which describes the three ancient types of Celtic music, Suantraí (lullaby), Geantraí (happy song) and Goltraí (lament). One of the group’s stated aims is to explore and redefine this music. An Uaithne became Anúna in 1991 and in 2010 adopted the name “Anúna, Ireland’s National Choir”. Most of the material they perform is written or arranged specifically for the group by Michael McGlynn. He also has reconstructed and arranged a substantial amount of early Irish music, which has been recorded by the group. McGlynn’s choral arrangements are written specifically for their combination of classically trained singers and untrained voices. Anúna do not work with a conductor in performance, and move throughout the venue at different points in concert. Their standard line-up is twelve to fourteen singers.

English

I worship you, my little child come on earth
Sleep peacefully, my child
I worship him, weak, naked and helpless
Sleep peacefully, my child

Tell me, my love, as you lie in the manger
Tell me why you lay stretched in the straw
You are a treasury of grace, and Jesus, Son of God
Sleep peacefully, my child
Sleep peacefully, my child

Mary, my mother and gentle nurse
Sleep peacefully, my child
I am a treasury of grace, and Jesus, Son of God
Sleep peacefully, my child

Desperately poor, I came with desire into this world
To save wandering exiles from death
And when I am suspended on high
they will lean towards me
Sleep peacefully, my child
Sleep peacefully, my child
